Position Purpose
The Street Outreach Worker supports programs that connect community members with services that meet human needs such as hunger, loneliness, isolation, and spiritual connection.
Accountabilities- Assist with intake services and client assessment to determine immediate needs and required supports.
- Refer clients to the Community Ministry Coordinator or Corps Officer for pastoral assistance.
- Assist other food bank staff with pick‑ups of food/toy donations from community donors.
- Process, unload, document, sort, reorganize, and re‑stock food and toy donations for the Family Services program; prepare donated items for distribution.
- Maintain food bank stock, cleanliness, tidiness, and organization of the food bank area; assist with food drives as needed.
- Arrange proper disposal of items received but not usable in the food bank.
- Adhere to all health and safety standards and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as required.
This is a temporary full‑time position based on 35 hours per week. Working hours are typically 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a ½‑hour unpaid meal break. The role requires frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and standing for long periods. Duties may involve lifting/moving up to 50 lb (22.68 kg) and working in office and food bank environments under generally agreeable conditions.
Conditionsof Employment
- Position funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
- Applicant age must be 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period.
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- Must have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- International students and individuals on visitor, youth, or work visas are not eligible.
- Ability to maintain valid immigration status throughout employment.
- Must pass a police record check acceptable to The Salvation Army.
- Completion of a minimum of Grade
10. - Safe Food Handling and First Aid/CPR certifications are an asset.
- Non‑violent Crisis Intervention training preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience working and/or volunteering in community‑based programs, including experience with multi‑barriered persons.
- Good computer skills with Microsoft Office.
- Self‑motivated and disciplined with strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
- Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
- Team player in a cooperative team environment.
- Good listening and effective oral/written communication skills.
- Ability to accept directions when necessary.
- Compliance with Salvation Army policies, procedures, and applicable legislation.
- Enthusiastic, approachable, and positive attitude toward all.
- Active listening to create a safe space and be attentive to others’ needs.
- Servant‑hearted, flexible, and willing to pitch in and assist as part of the team.
- Open to growth and learning with integrity.
- Undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully.
- Understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army.
Target hiring range: $17.60 to $21.03 per hour, with a maximum of $25.23. Placement within the range is based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications.
