Indigenous Justice Advisory Group

The Indigenous Justice Advisory Group advises both the National Indigenous Council and the General Council Executive on matters related to Indigenous justice, reminding the church that the ministry of healing and reconciliation belongs to the whole church.

Vacancies: One to two vacancies; non-Indigenous/settler, including one young adult

Mandate

The Indigenous Justice Advisory Group advises the National Indigenous Organization and the General Council Executive on matters related to Indigenous justice, the legacy of residential schools, and the Calls to Action issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. This encompasses legal requirements, pastoral care, communication, healing, advocacy, education, reflection, spiritual renewal, and building right relations. The Advisory Group reminds The United Church of Canada that the ministry of healing and reconciliation belongs to the whole church.

Membership

The Advisory Group is made up of three Indigenous members and three non-Indigenous settler/newcomer members, including one Indigenous and one non-Indigenous young adult. Two members of the National Indigenous Elders Council and one member of the National Indigenous Council also participate in the work of this Advisory Group.

Member Skills and Experience

Non-Indigenous members (also known as settlers or newcomers) with:

  • good awareness of Indigenous justice issues
  • familiarity with the legacy of the residential school system
  • familiarity with the United Church’s history as it pertains to Indigenous ministry and justice
  • One of the appointed settler/newcomer members will be a young adult (under the age of 30).

    United Church Relationship: Active participant

    Expectations and Term

  • Online meetings
    :
    Two to three times per year.
  • In-person meetings: One or two meetings, of two to three days’ duration, over the three-year term.
  • Expectations between meetings: Occasional reading and requests for decision by email; advocacy for Indigenous justice and reconciliation within one’s community and community of faith.
  • Additional appointment possibilities or expectations: Possible additional short-term working groups.
  • Appointment term: Three years beginning December 2026, with the possibility for reappointment for a second three-year term.
