The Geriatric Mental Health Program is currently seeking a full‑time, permanent Registered Practical Nurse to work in the Geriatric Admission Unit A and B (GAU-A and GAU-B). Reporting to the GAU-A Manager and working within the inter‑professional team, you will provide client‑centred care to older individuals with mental health and addiction issues. You will provide psychiatric and general nursing care and ensure the security, safety and the CNO standards of nursing practice are maintained.

As a full‑time RPN, you will collaborate with the primary nurse to perform assessments, develop, implement and evaluate the interdisciplinary plan of client care for clients with mental health and addiction issues. You will also work with patients from diverse backgrounds, contribute to program development, and provide education support and supervision to students. You should have sound knowledge of geriatric psychiatry, crisis intervention and addiction issues.

Your skills should include the ability to make behavioural observations, mental status assessments, monitor patient’s response to pharmaceutical and care interventions, documentation and ongoing communication with other team members. These positions involve a 12‑hour shift rotation and weekend work, and are located at the Queen Street site.

You must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario and possess a current B.C.L.S. (CPR) and medication administration certification. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to develop the nurse‑client relationship and work within a collaborative, diverse inter‑professional team. Preference will be given to candidates with strong knowledge of psychiatric nursing, particularly related to the care of older persons with mental health and/or addiction issues, and with experience intervening effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour.

Experience with individuals from diverse ethno‑cultural and socio‑economic backgrounds, computer literacy, and bilingualism (French/English) or another second language are also assets.

All applicants offered and accepting employment must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check. The offer of employment will be conditional upon receipt of a satisfactory check.
