The Clinical Nurse Specialist – Geriatric Emergency Medicine, with a specialty-based focus, functions in an expanded nursing role, demonstrating a high level of autonomy and clinical expertise in the care of geriatric patients with acute and chronic illnesses, while also promoting wellness. This role involves advanced clinical decision-making and leadership in nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse Specialist serves as a leader and change agent, supporting the implementation of best practices and the advancement of nursing standards in the Emergency Department (ED).
Duties- Conduct comprehensive gerontological assessment using appropriate screening tools and clinical cognitive and physical assessment (review of significant lab/x-ray tests and current as well as past medical records), and identification of high-risk patient for facilitation of appropriate interdisciplinary follow-up
- Coach, mentor and support staff in the continued development of advanced clinical skills, critical decision making, and patient centered care
- Perform quality improvement and administrative responsibilities
- Conduct research activities; deliver, coordinate, and participate in education initiatives
- Engage in activities that support the development and advancement of the profession
- Serve as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community and other hospital/agencies
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
- Completion of a master’s degree in nursing or recognized equivalent
- Specialty certificate in gerontology preferred
- Five (5) years experience in an acute care setting
- Experience in nursing research methodology
- Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
- Current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
