OVERVIEW
Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences.
The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers.
EDUCATION
- Registered Practical Nursing diploma with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BCLS required.
- Current Medication Administration Certificate.
- Recent work experience in a renal inpatient or outpatient unit required.
- Completion of RPN assessment course required.
- Completion or willingness to complete the RPN Nephrology Nursing Course.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be prepared to work in all areas of the Medicine Health Service.
- Maintains competence relative to current practices.
- Demonstrates expertise in renal practice.
- 2 years’ experience in renal nursing required.
- Demonstrated clinical experience in providing care to patients with End Stage renal Disease.
- Demonstrated clinical experience in providing care to patients with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
- Demonstrated ability to teach patients and families.
- 2-3 years of recent continuous experience and demonstrated competence in IV therapy including challenging IV starts.
- Demonstrated competence and recent experience in management of central venous access devices (CVAD), including assisting the physician with insertion.
- Demonstrates ability to effectively participate with the interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to de-escalatesituations as they arise.
- Demonstrates use of Core Service Standards.
- Demonstrates a commitment to continued professional and personal growth and development through continuing education programs and self-directed learning opportunities.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated computer literacy.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instruction and pay attention to detail.
- Demonstrates excellent organizational skills, able to prioritize and multi-task efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to work to full scope of practice as defined by unit.
- Demonstrated ability to follow standards, policies and procedures.
- Excellent time management and attendance record required.
