Job OverviewAs a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room, you will deliver perioperative nursing care for patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery. You will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to support safe, efficient surgical care and excellent patient outcomes.
Responsibilities- Establish and maintain good human relations with professional and non‑professional staff, patients, families, volunteers, and the community.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures of the Kensington Eye Institute.
- Deliver patient‑centred care in accordance with the Patient’s Bill of Rights and organizational standards.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative team members to coordinate patient care.
- Perform both circulating and scrub nurse duties in the operating room based on operational needs.
- Observe strict aseptic techniques throughout each procedure and report any breaks in technique to the surgeon.
- Ensure all equipment is functional before use and remove and report any malfunctioning equipment.
- Provide pre‑operative and post‑operative nursing care as assigned.
- Refer issues and concerns to the clinical team and leaders in a timely manner.
- Complete additional duties as assigned based on operational needs.
- Seek educational opportunities and accept responsibility for own professional growth and development.
- Work safely in compliance with accepted safe work practices, procedures, and legislated health‑and‑safety standards.
- Practice within the RN scope of practice and established policies and procedures.
- Promote a cooperative working environment.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the Kensington Eye Institute.
- Contribute clinical expertise to the development and revision of policies, procedures, and practice standards.
- Facilitate team building and promote change and innovative ideas.
- Use scientific knowledge in a systematic approach to identifying problems and in problem solving.
- Seek out opportunities to maintain competency and to continuously learn, taking an active role in continuous quality improvement.
- Support the budget for KEI and work within its parameters.
- Provide input into the need and use of equipment and supplies required for patients.
- Current General Class (Practising) RN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BLS certification.
- Completion of a perioperative RN nursing program.
- Minimum of one year of recent, relevant operating room clinical experience.
- Demonstrated strong work ethic and excellent attendance record.
- Ability to cross‑train to pre‑ and post‑operative areas.
- Willingness to work flexible hours to meet the needs of patients and the facility.
- Preferred: ORNAC‑approved perioperative nursing program.
- Preferred:
Acute‑care experience. - Preferred: CNA certification in perioperative nursing.
- Preferred:
Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
