Purpose

The Specialty Program Nurse (SPN) plays a critical role in supporting patients prescribed specialty therapies within dermatology and other specialty clinic programs as needed. The SPN acts as a clinical liaison between patients, physicians, specialty pharmacies, insurance providers, and Patient Support Programs to facilitate timely access to treatment, provide patient education, and support adherence to therapy. This role combines direct patient care, clinical coordination, reimbursement navigation, and multidisciplinary collaboration in a fast-paced specialty clinic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Care & Clinical Support:
    Provide comprehensive nursing support to patients initiating and receiving specialty therapies within dermatology and other specialty areas as required; conduct patient assessments and provide education regarding diagnosis, disease state, treatment plans, medication administration, side effect management, and adherence strategies; deliver ongoing patient follow-up and support to promote treatment compliance and optimize clinical outcomes; coordinate and monitor patient care plans, including required laboratory work, diagnostic testing, and follow-up appointments;

    support patients through therapy initiation and maintenance while addressing barriers to care and treatment access; provide compassionate care to diverse and at-risk patient populations.
  • Reimbursement & Access Coordination:
    Facilitate prior authorizations, insurance benefit investigations, and reimbursement processes for specialty medications; collaborate with pharmaceutical Patient Support Programs and specialty pharmacies to ensure timely medication access; track approvals, renewals, denials, and appeals while ensuring all required documentation is completed accurately and efficiently; assist patients in navigating public and private drug coverage options.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    Act as a key point of contact between physicians, nurses, pharmacies, laboratories, and external healthcare partners; communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity and coordination of care; provide clinical and therapy-related support to patients and healthcare professionals as required.
  • Administrative & Documentation Responsibilities:
    Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records within EMR systems (Accuro experience is considered an asset); monitor and document patient progress, treatment outcomes, and adherence metrics; manage reminder systems related to follow-up visits, laboratory monitoring, medication renewals, and ongoing therapy requirements; participate in program quality improvement initiatives and reporting activities.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in good standing with the applicable provincial regulatory body.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in dermatology and/or specialty clinic settings.
  • Experience supporting patients receiving specialty medications is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of biologics and specialty pharmaceuticals.
  • Experience with reimbursement processes, prior authorizations, and Patient Support Programs.
  • Comfortable working with diverse patient populations.
  • Strong clinical assessment and patient education skills.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong problem-solving and care coordination abilities.
  • Compassionate, patient-centered approach to nursing care.
