How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

Field Staff, Development & Engineering Services (Urban Forestry) are responsible for various field operations, monitoring and data collection activities, routine maintenance work, and general construction duties in support of TRCA’s environmental research, inventory and monitoring programs and projects.

Overall, two field staff will play an integral role in the implementation of an urban tree inventory project occurring in Peel Region, and one in conducting an urban forest assessment in the City of Pickering. This position is responsible for ensuring that data is collected efficiently, safely, effectively, and accurately in the field. The Field Staff will be in constant communication with their team to ensure adherence to project objectives and protocols.

The field staff must also comply with relevant corporate and municipal procedures and by-laws, and provincial and federal legislation.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assists with planning and preparation for seasonal field activities. Carries out monitoring and data collection activities in support of TRCA’s programs.
  • Participates in surveying, utilizing environmental monitoring instruments and equipment.
  • Carries out field data collection on trees (species, DBH, height, condition, etc.), and invasive species and pests.
  • Participates in daily safety meetings, including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning.
  • Assists with environmental data QA/QC and entry/input.

What will you need to succeed:

Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)

  • Minimum pursuing post-secondary diploma or degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences Urban Forestry or a related field
  • Valid Class G2 driver’s license

Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies

  • The ability to demonstrate strong problem-solving skills in a field environment
  • Able to comprehend written documentation and procedural guidelines; skilled in writing clear correspondence (concise, logical, grammatically correct)
  • Familiarity with tree and shrub species and common invasive plant species in the Greater Toronto Area or southern Ontario, or the ability to use a key to identify species
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy
  • Under the guidance of their supervisor, prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating workload
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify problems in a timely manner, seeking the appropriate level of support to resolve issues
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including Excel; proficiency in online software such as MS Teams, and SharePoint an asset
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation
  • Familiarity with basic forest mensuration an asset
