Position Summary

Health and Safety Director
The Health & Safety Lead is responsible for overseeing and implementing comprehensive health and safety strategies across all phases of infrastructure projects. This role requires specialized knowledge of heavy civil construction and safety protocols. The Health & Safety Lead leads by example, especially in high-risk or crisis situations, ensuring a culture of safety and compliance throughout the organization.
The Health & Safety Lead'sKey Responsibilities Are
- Developing safety, security, health and environmental policies, standards and programs for employees and sub-contractors’ activities; regulatory affairs; and emergency preparedness and ensuring business continuity systems are in place.
- Scheduling and coordinating Independent Quality Audits with the independent quality auditor.
- Create and implement safety plans while ensuring that they are being followed daily.
- Conduct safety observation reports regularly.
- Coordinating HS activities alongside the progress on documents status, monthly safety inspections and compliance documentation completion.
- Attend safety walks and inspections to analyze safety risks.
- Educate employees on safety standards and expectations as well as safe operation.
- Provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace.
- Investigate accidents that occur onsite and identify probable causes of the accident.
- Maintain documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents, and related events.
- Act as a liaison between management and external safety agencies, such as fire and insurance personnel.
- Intervenes in correcting unsafe work practices that may be going on in the project.
- Monitors employees’ and company’s adherence to safety policies and/or guidelines.
- Keeps record of all safety-related issues within the organization and makes sure that corrective measures are taken.
- Organizes routine training on health and safety matters for the staff of the organization.
- Conduct periodical audits and associated documents preparation, as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive documentation.
- Planning the health and safety program and protocols. Monitors employees’ and company’s adherence to safety policies and/or guidelines.
- Training supervisors, managers, and other leaders in the company about health and safety standards. Presenting safety training sessions to the company.
- Ensuring compliance with OSHA, federal, provincial, and local regulations.
- Handling risk assessments to gather information on safety issues.
- Verifying that employees consistently follow safety protocols.
- Analyzing health and safety data. Reviewing and recommending changes to regular activities.
- Policy drafting/formulation and administration, dissemination of safety policies within crews, and subcontractors.
- Organizes accident investigation processes.
- Keeps record of all safety-related issues within the organization and makes sure that corrective measures are taken.
- Ensure protocols regarding health and safety to do with pandemic response and mitigation are in place.
- Work closely with the Project Managers, Superintendents, and team members to ensure correct and timely closing of the safety issues.
- 10 years' experience with at least 5 years of health and safety related experience on major construction projects in a lead role.
- Construction Health and Safety Officer: NCSO-IHSA; or Canadian Registered Professional (CRSP); or demonstrated equivalent.
- Possess a bachelor's degree in health and safety or any science related field.
- Possess BS or BA in safety management or in any other related field of study, such as engineering, biology, or chemistry while an MS will be an added advantage with a minimum of three (5) years of relevant work…
