The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital and one of the world’s leading research centres in the area of addiction and mental health. CAMH combines clinical care, research, education, policy development and health promotion to transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions. The Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute (CFMHRI) is home to scientists, staff and research trainees conducting research to improve the understanding of the brain and the causes and biomarkers of mental illness as well as making advances in prevention and treatment across the lifespan.
The Centre for Youth Bipolar Disorder (CYBD) at CAMH is an internationally recognized leader in advancing research, clinical care, and knowledge translation focused on bipolar disorder in youth. CYBD’s mission is to improve early identification, prevention, and long‑term outcomes for young people with, or at familial risk for, bipolar disorder. The Centre combines cutting‑edge methodologies—including longitudinal cohort studies, neuroimaging, cardiovascular and genetic research, and patient‑partnered approaches—to deepen understanding of mood disorders and associated risks.
Accountabilities- Develop and carry out a sustained and consistent program of research projects as a Project Lead / Principal Investigator, independently overseeing and leading all aspects of research projects for their complete duration/lifecycle.
- Secure and manage extramural research funding from national peer‑reviewed agencies and/or industry‑sponsored partnerships and contracts sufficient to maintain a strong program of research projects over time.
- Maintain consistent levels of research output, including publications as first or senior author in scientific peer‑reviewed journals and presentations and dissemination of results at academic meetings and conferences. Where appropriate, other outputs such as commercialization (e.g. patent submissions; licensing of intellectual property) and data analysis (e.g. database or analytics software development; code sharing) are also desirable.
- Establish internal and external research collaborations, and over time develop a research profile at local, national, and international levels.
- Seek out and engage in academic community service and participate effectively in CAMH Research, hospital, and university research‑related administrative and other science community activities, such as advisory groups.
- Supervise, train and mentor personnel (including technical and research staff) and act as the primary supervisor for research trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and post‑doctoral level.
- Ph.D. in a relevant health sciences discipline or a related field, and a minimum of 3 years of post‑graduate research experience (5 years of independent research experience preferred).
- Strong record of research on suicide risk and self‑harm in youth with bipolar disorder, with an emphasis on neuroimaging and neurocognitive approaches, as demonstrated by peer‑reviewed publications in top‑quintile journals.
- History of progressive involvement in peer‑review and in local, national, and international research organizations.
- National and international prizes and accolades that convey the impact and novelty of the candidate’s research are valued, as is a track record of competitive research funding appropriate for career stage.
- Eligibility to obtain an academic appointment within a University of Toronto department at the Assistant Professor level.
- Sound judgment, excellent organizational, communication (verbal/written) and strong analytical skills; demonstrated ability to cultivate internal and external relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers and the scientific community; ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team made up of individuals of diverse ethno‑racial and cultural backgrounds.
- Bilingualism (English/French) and/or proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
