About Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University)

At the intersection of mind and action, Toronto Metropolitan University is on a transformative path to become Canada’s leading comprehensive innovation university. Integral to this path is the placement of equity, diversity and inclusion as fundamental to our institutional culture. Our current academic plan outlines each as core values and we work to embed them in all that we do.

About the Global Migration Institute and the BMO Newcomer Workforce Integration Lab

The Global Migration Institute, launched in April 2026 at Toronto Metropolitan University, is an international research hub dedicated to advancing research, policy engagement, and public dialogue on migration and integration. The Institute focuses on migration experiences, policies and practices, labour migration, technology and AI, narratives and public discourse, and migrant inclusion across diverse global contexts.

The BMO Newcomer Workforce Integration Lab is an initiative housed within the Global Migration Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University. The Lab brings together researchers, employers, community organizations, policy‑makers, and newcomers to conduct action‑oriented research and knowledge mobilization on labour market integration in Canada.

The Lab focuses on issues related to labour migration, immigrant employment integration, international students and temporary residents, skills recognition, workplace inclusion, employer practices, and the role of advanced digital technologies and AI in hiring and workforce integration. Through collaborative and interdisciplinary research, the Lab aims to bridge research and practice and support the development of equitable and evidence‑based workforce integration strategies.

The

opportunity

The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to the BMO Lab's research on migration and labour market integration in Canada, with a focus on two areas. First, the Fellow will conduct quantitative research using large‑scale datasets — including the Census, the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB), and the Labour Force Survey — to examine the employment outcomes and labour market integration of immigrants in Canada.

Second, the Fellow will explore the role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in migration and labour market integration, with particular attention to digital recruitment systems, algorithmic hiring, and the use of advanced digital technologies by migrants, job seekers, employers, and institutions.

We welcome applications from candidates with strong technical expertise in quantitative methods, computational social science, or data science, as well as those with knowledge of AI applications in migration or labour market research.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Anna Triandafyllidou and Marshia Akbar, and will collaborate with researchers, graduate students, research assistants, employers, policy‑makers, and community stakeholders associated with the BMO Lab.
