The role is to provide technical support for the successful operations of the teaching laboratories in the Department of Biology. This includes setting-up laboratory rooms according to laboratory requirements, modifying techniques, if necessary, in consultation with the course/laboratory directors, and preparing requisite materials.
Education4-year BSc. degree including upper-level laboratory courses in Biology or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.
ExperienceTwo years' related experience including assembling, testing and using laboratory equipment, setting up experiments, assessing results of experiments in a laboratory setting. Experience in troubleshooting including literature reviews.
Skills- In-depth knowledge and experience in: laboratory techniques and methodology in Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Physiology, laboratory safety regulations and guidelines, operating a wide variety of laboratory instruments.
- Ability to support ecology, physiology, molecular biology and microbiological laboratories.
- Skilled operational knowledge of the following:
Laboratory safety and government guidelines pertaining thereto, media preparation, sterile techniques, animal/aquarium maintenance and handling. - Good oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated skill/ability in the following areas: operating and routinely maintaining a wide variety of laboratory instruments including microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometer, balances, incubators, autoclaves, and pH meters.
- Dealing courteously and effectively with others.
- Attending accurately to detail, excellent organizational skills, working independently and setting priorities.
- Exercising good judgment.
- Planning and executing complex tasks under pressure or deadlines.
Hours of work:
Shifts (7 hours) vary to align with assigned labs â?? requires flexibility based on operational requirements.
Summer:
Same Requests to work overtime may occur during peak periods.
Vacation restriction:
Vacation may be restricted by the laboratory schedule and will be coordinated to ensure adequate coverage.
