About Us

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 6,400 uniformed officers, 2,900 civilian employees and 530 Auxiliary officers. Uniform Recruitment Unit is a part of the Training and Recruitment Bureau and is responsible for hiring hundreds of new recruits and experienced police officers each year. The team includes recruiters, administrators, psychologists, a marketing and communications team and background investigators.

Uniform Recruitment works closely with other program areas to support their staffing needs. This includes People Operations, Civilian Data Entry, the Provincial Communications Centres and the Cadet, Auxiliary and Special Constable programs.

What can I expect to do in this role?

To provide psychological services through the administration of psychometric assessments to screen all new uniform employees, to evaluate potential transfers of existing employees to specialized units and to assess some civilian employees for specific positions.

What you bring to the team
Mandatory Requirements
  • Ability to pass an OPP background/security investigation.
  • A valid Class G Driver's licence for the purpose of travelling to various locations to perform required testing.

Skills and Abilities


Psychological Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Theories of human development and relevant psychological theories, methodologies and practices including the fundamental principles and theories related to the psychological testing principles to provide screening and interpretation services through the selection, administration and scoring of a range of psychological tests.
  • Canadian Code of Ethics for psychologists.
  • Statistics, research design, and computer applications to interpret assessment results and undertake research projects.
  • Web or paper based psychological test administration and interpretation with respect to police culture.
  • Ability to interpret policies including Human Resources policies, guidelines and protocols, Public Service of Ontario Act, Community Safety and Policing Act, and Privacy Legislation to:
  • produce compliant reports to appropriately evaluate tests in relation to proposed transfers and
  • to report assessments to psychologist that might affect specialty program activities.
Interpersonal and Communication
  • Provide explanation to staff and applicants on the nature and administration of psychological rests.
  • Discuss complex issues or problems concerning assessments with supervising psychologist.
  • Prepare assessment reports.
  • Prepare and review literature on specific research projects.
  • Share interpretation of test results.
  • Work co-operatively and collaboratively within a team/work group.
  • Work collaboratively, contributing fully to achieve group and organizational goals.

  • Interpret information gathered for reports and make recommendations on applicant's suitability for a position.
  • Hold oneself accountable for acting in ways that are consistent with OPP values, principles, and/or professional standards.
  • Build and maintain professional credibility by acting with integrity, modeling clear values and standards, and effectively communicating these expectations to foster trust, consistency, and accountability with others.
Problem Solving and Complexity
  • Identify appropriate strategies and resources for assessing candidates.
  • Decipher data generated from assessments to write a report of findings that is an accurate interpretation of data results and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Determine suitable assessment techniques and methodologies to collect information.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative statistical data to analyze through processing and interpretive techniques and validating results.
  • Use appropriate computer software and techniques to properly evaluate information, such as Microsoft office suites, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.
