OverviewResponsible for direct implementation of Covenant House philosophy, mission, and policies as they relate to residential care. This 24/7 role supports youth in finding and securing affordable housing, visiting apartments, coordinating furniture assistance, navigating welfare programs, and building a landlord pool.
Responsibilities- Direct implementation of Covenant House philosophy, mission statement and policies for disconnected, homeless and hard-to‑serve youth
- Complete a housing history and assessment with each youth
- Develop an appropriate housing plan (market rent apartments, co‑ops, or group homes) per Hostel Services guidelines
- Develop an appropriate discharge plan per Hostel Services guidelines
- Provide after‑care support for vulnerable youth through CSS drop‑in and home visiting
- Assist youth in selecting an appropriate roommate for shared accommodation
- Support youth during negotiations with landlords
- Provide eviction prevention to youth at risk of being evicted
- Assist youth in developing and following a housing budget
- Connect youth to life skills training via YIT supports or external referrals
- Assist youth in applying for community start‑up allowance from the welfare office
- Provide “hands on” support as requested by the Case Management Team (e.g., escorting youth to appointments)
- Assist youth in acquiring furniture, linen and kitchen utensils
- Liaise with other service providers and housing registries to identify suitable accommodation
- Find and secure new landlords in the community
- Other duties as assigned
- College or university degree or diploma in child and youth work or equivalent
- Minimum two years’ experience in a shelter or residential setting
- Knowledge of adolescent developmental theory and specific issues related to street youth
- First Aid, CPR and basic computer skills an asset
- Preference for candidates with housing and community resources experience; working knowledge of the Tenant Protection Act and the welfare system
- Excellent report‑writing skills and experience with statistical data collection
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledgeable in using ETO software and data entry
- Valid Ontario G driver’s license
