The Supportive Housing Program provides housing for seniors who have experienced homelessness and may be living with mental health and/or substance use challenges. The program offers onsite psychosocial and primary care supports aimed at promoting stability, wellness, and self‑sufficiency within a supportive community environment.
Residents receive a wide range of supports, including intensive case management, harm reduction and addiction support, therapeutic and supportive counselling, 24‑hour staffing, assistance with activities of daily living, nursing services, life skills development, and social, recreational, and volunteer opportunities. The program’s approach is guided by Wood Green’s commitment to community development, anti‑discrimination, and harm reduction principles, while working within relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.
Reporting to the Manager and/or Supervisor of Supportive Housing Programs, the Overnight Support Worker plays a key role in ensuring the safety and well‑being of residents and the building during overnight hours. Responsibilities include providing reception and security support, monitoring common areas, responding to emergencies and resident alarms, implementing crisis and de‑escalation strategies, providing after‑hours supportive counselling, enforcing building policies, and completing required clerical, shift exchange, and risk management duties as part of a collaborative care team.
WhatYou Will Do
- Provide reception services to staff and residents living in the supportive housing program.
- Ensure the safety of the building and its occupants after regular business hours.
- Enforce the zero‑guest policy at all times.
- Monitor activities in the common areas and the outside perimeter of the building through security cameras/visual inspections and respond appropriately.
- Implement crisis response strategies, including de‑escalation, support, and debriefing when necessary.
- Complete hourly rounds on the participant floors.
- Provide after‑hours supportive counselling to residents when required.
- Redirect any visitors and respond to issues appropriately.
- Perform lock‑up and alarm duties in accordance with established procedures.
- Respond to the 24‑hour resident personal alarm system according to appropriate procedures; understand how to operate, troubleshoot and contact the 24‑hour response team for the emergency response system as necessary.
- Carry out appropriate first‑aid responses when necessary.
- Work effectively with other team members, including on‑site Home Support Workers, to address resident and building issues.
- Complete a detailed participant activity log and shift exchange, reporting any incidents, occurrences, health and safety risks, status of resident community, and resident interpersonal conflict.
- Understand risk management procedures and respond professionally and appropriately, including responding to all emergency situations such as managing a resident emergency (e.g., illness, fire in the unit or building) or emergency that affects building operations (e.g., elevator breakdown, power failure).
- Be prepared to work in environments where there might be pest control and hoarding issues.
- Be prepared to work in environments where there may be death and dying.

- Perform other duties assigned by the management team.
- Two‑year diploma in social services or certification in security.
- Minimum three (3) years of demonstrated experience working with older adults and/or seniors with mental health, addictions issues, and street involvement.
- Ability to interact effectively with high‑risk, marginalized, and vulnerable individuals.
- Demonstrated ability and experience dealing with aggressive behaviours and effective de‑escalation and boundary‑setting skills.
