Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a highly capable and innovation‑driven Principal Software Engineer to play a critical technical leadership role within our Claims Technology organization.

This is a hands‑on senior individual contributor role responsible for designing, building, and evolving scalable, high-quality software solutions that support claims processing, automation, and modernization initiatives. Principal Software Engineer will influence architecture, establish engineering best practices, mentor engineers, and partner closely with claims operations and enterprise technology teams.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in enterprise software engineering, strong knowledge of claims systems and integrations, and the ability to lead by example through code, design, and technical decision‑making. Experience with Duck Creek Claims is a strong plus.

• Develop high-quality, production-grade code and participate actively in code reviews, debugging and performance optimization.
• Build and enhance services, APIs, workflows and data integrations supporting claims processing and automation.
• Design robust, scalable, secure and maintainable Claims technology solutions that align with Enterprise Engineering, Architecture and Security standards.
• Serve as a technical SME for Claims Technology solutions, providing technical leadership across multiple systems and integrations.
• Mentor and guide engineers through technical coaching, design reviews and best practices.
• Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Product Owners, Architects and business stakeholders to ensure aligned delivery.
• Contribute to the design, customization, and extension of claims platform, including configuration-driven and custom-built components.
• Partner with claims and operations stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into effective technical solutions.
• Duck Creek Claims experience (configuration, extensions, integrations, or upgrades) is highly desirable.

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience designing enterprise-scale systems while effectively balancing near-term delivery and long-term architectural health.
• Deep expertise in application design, object-oriented and/or service-oriented architecture and API-based integrations.
• Proficiency in modern programming languages and frameworks commonly used in enterprise environments (.NET, Java or equivalent).
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases, data modeling and performance optimization.
• Experience working on claims systems or insurance platforms within Property & Casualty insurance.
• Duck Creek Claims technical experience (configuration, development, integrations, or platform upgrades) is a strong plus.
• Ability to translate complex technical concepts for technical and non-technical audiences, supported by strong analytical, problem-solving, and quality-focused attention to detail.
