Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Western Investment Company of Canada (Western Investments, WI.V) is an insurance and investments holding company focused on decentralized ownership of insurance businesses and centralized investment management. We are looking for a technically capable and curious recent computer science graduate who wants to work closely with leadership and help autonomously build foundational systems from the ground up for the company and its subsidiaries.

Role

Summary

The Junior Technical Associate, Software & Data Systems will support the design, development, and improvement of internal software tools, data workflows, automation, dashboards, and AI-enabled processes. This is a broad, hands‑on role suited to a recent graduate who wants autonomy, exposure to real business problems, and the opportunity to build useful systems that directly affect and optimizes how the company and its subsidiaries operate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Translate business needs into technical solutions: Work directly with executives and business users to understand problems, define requirements, and turn ambiguous ideas into working solutions.
  • Develop foundational systems: Help create reusable and scalable code, documentation, templates, and processes that can scale across the company and its subsidiaries.
  • Support AI and automation initiatives: Prototype and implement responsible uses of AI tools, document automation, retrieval workflows, and productivity systems where appropriate.
  • Improve data workflows: Work with structured data, databases, spreadsheets, and APIs to clean, transform, analyze, and automate recurring business processes.
  • Maintain quality and reliability: Use sound engineering practices, version control, testing, documentation, and security‑conscious development habits.
What We Are Looking For
  • Recent graduate or upcoming graduate with a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Strong programming fundamentals and the ability to write clean, understandable code.
  • Comfort working with databases, APIs, spreadsheets, data files, and basic cloud or web technologies.
  • Ability to break down ambiguous problems, ask good questions, and work independently while seeking feedback when needed.
  • Strong communication skills and interest in working directly with non‑technical business stakeholders.
  • Curiosity, ownership mindset, and willingness to learn new tools quickly in a small‑company environment.
Nice-to-Have Experience
  • Experience with AI and agentic coding tools highly preferred.
  • Experience building web applications, internal tools, dashboards, or data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with React, Next.js, Node.js, FastAPI, Flask, Django, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with Git/Git Hub, CI/CD basics, Docker, Azure, Google Cloud, AWS, Big Query, or comparable platforms.
  • Interest in applied AI, language models, automation, document processing, retrieval systems, or agentic coding tools.
  • Exposure to finance, insurance, analytics, operations, consulting, or regulated business environments.
What Success Looks Like
  • Within the first 30 days, you understand the company's key workflows, data sources, and priority technical pain points.
  • Within the first 60 to 90 days, you have delivered useful improvements such as automations, dashboards, scripts, prototypes, or internal tools that save time or improve decision‑making.
  • Over time, you become a trusted technical contributor who can independently identify problems, propose practical solutions, and build reliable systems that support growth.
Why This Role Is Different
  • High exposure to executive decision‑making and immediate business problems.
  • Opportunity to work creatively and autonomously on foundational projects that shape how the company operates.
  • Broad learning across software, finance, insurance, AI, and business strategy.
  • A strong fit for someone who wants the pace and responsibility of a startup rather than a narrowly defined entry‑level role.
