Product Engineer, Smart Store

Location:

Toronto (Hybrid). Most development can be done remotely, though this role benefits from occasional in-person collaboration and hands-on work with Smart Store hardware, devices, and prototypes.

Micromart is building the platform for unattended retail. We empower entrepreneurs to turn any location into a retail opportunity, from offices and condos to gyms, hotels, and other shared spaces. Our focus is on giving entrepreneurs powerful tools that are simple to use, while delivering a fast, intuitive shopping experience for shoppers.

Often described as Shopify for physical commerce, Micromart provides the infrastructure that powers unattended retail in the real world.

Micromart launched just over a year ago and is now used in thousands of locations across North America. We re a small and growing team working closely across product, frontend, backend, and Smart Store systems, from design through production.

Work here is end to end. That means starting from real customer problems, making pragmatic tradeoffs, shipping code, and improving the product over time. As we scale, there s real ownership, real impact, and room to grow.

As a Product Engineer, Smart Store, you ll help build and evolve the software experiences that shoppers interact with every day inside Micromart Smart Stores.

You ll work across our in-store checkout experience, customer-facing displays, payment experiences, connected retail technologies, and supporting Smart Store applications. You ll collaborate closely with Product, Design, Backend, and Hardware teams to create intuitive, reliable experiences that bridge the physical and digital worlds.

Your focus will be on building software that shoppers use every day while helping make Smart Stores faster, easier, and more engaging to use.

• Build and evolve customer-facing Smart Store experiences including checkout, payment, display, and connected retail applications
• Own features end-to-end, from implementation through production and iteration
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Backend, and Hardware teams to bring new ideas to life
• Build software that integrates with payment systems, APIs, third-party SDKs, and connected devices
• Improve usability, reliability, and performance across Smart Store experiences
• Contribute across the stack when needed to deliver complete product experiences
• Help identify customer pain points and translate them into practical solutions
• Contribute to platform initiatives and frontend projects across the broader Micromart ecosystem when needed
• Participate in architecture and technical discussions while helping evolve our frontend stack over time

• Strong experience building production applications using React and Type Script
• Strong frontend fundamentals including state management, API integration, and debugging
• Experience shipping customer-facing product experiences
• Comfort working with ambiguity and taking ownership of features from concept through production
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Interest in solving real-world problems through software
• Curiosity about how software interacts with hardware, payments, and physical systems
• A bias toward simplicity, quality, and continuous improvement

• Experience with React Native
• Experience working across frontend and backend systems
• Experience integrating with third-party APIs or SDKs
• Experience working with hardware, IoT, connected devices, or physical products
• Experience working on operational or workflow-heavy software
• Experience debugging production issues and complex application state
• Experience working in startups or small teams where ownership mattered more than process
• Familiarity with tools such as Tan Stack Query, GraphQL, MUI, or similar frontend ecosystems
• Experience with frontend test automation (e.g. Cypress)
