Job Description & How to Apply Below

Description

:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious, globally minded correspondent to cover Canada, documenting the political, economic and cultural forces shaping America’s most important trading partner. Canada is often viewed through a narrow lens in U.S. discourse, yet the country sits at the center of critical debates over trade, energy, immigration, industrial policy and the future of Western alliances. This role will bring clarity, urgency and distinctive reporting to stories that matter deeply to Journal readers across business, finance and geopolitics.

At a moment of heightened tension in North American relations, the correspondent will chronicle how Canadian leaders—including Prime Minister Mark Carney—navigate a complex relationship with President Donald Trump, respond to mounting tariff pressure from Washington and manage domestic economic strains tied to global uncertainty. The position offers an opportunity to define the Journal’s coverage of a country whose policy choices reverberate through global markets, supply chains and diplomacy.

From trade disputes and currency movements to energy transitions, housing pressures and political realignments, this beat sits squarely at the intersection of economics and power.

This is a high-impact reporting role within the Journal’s international coverage. You will deliver agenda-setting journalism that explains Canada to a global audience while breaking news that resonates in boardrooms, ministries and markets. The correspondent will be based in Toronto and report to a senior editor on the Journal’s World desk.

You will

  • Lead coverage of Canada’s political economy, with a particular focus on trade tensions with the United States, tariff disputes, cross-border investment and the economic consequences for industries, workers and consumers.

  • Chronicle the leadership and policy direction of key figures—including Mark Carney—as they navigate relations with Washington, manage domestic fiscal and monetary challenges and position Canada in a shifting global order.

  • Break news and produce deeply reported features and analysis on major Canadian storylines, including energy and natural resources, housing affordability, immigration, industrial policy, technology investment and regional political dynamics.

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across North and South America, Washington, New York and global bureaus to deliver distinctive, fast and authoritative coverage for digital and print audiences.

  • Develop a robust network of sources spanning government, business, finance, academia and civil society, enabling exclusive reporting and sharp insight into emerging trends.

  • You Have

  • Substantial experience covering politics, economics, business or international affairs, ideally with at least five to ten years of reporting at a major news organization.

  • A demonstrated ability to break news, produce sophisticated enterprise reporting and translate complex economic or policy developments into compelling journalism for a broad readership.

  • Deep curiosity about Canada’s role in global markets and geopolitics, along with the analytical skills to connect domestic developments to international consequences.

  • Strong source-building skills, sound news judgment and the ability to thrive in a fast-moving, competitive news environment.

  • Excellent writing, collaboration and deadline skills, and comfort working across formats including live coverage, analysis and long-form features.

  • Fluency in French with the ability to work in the language.

  • What to Submit

Applicants should provide a résumé, a cover letter explaining their interest in the role and three to five published work samples, with one or two sentences that describe how the stories demonstrate your abilities.

    Final date to receive applications

Please apply by March 13 to be considered for this position. (Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.)
