Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual that is knowledgeable in the operation of a Fleet Maintenance garage, able to communicate with staff in a unionized environment and third-party vendors and promote a high level of commitment to reliable customer service delivery.

Reporting to the Commander, Fleet Services, the Superintendent, Fleet Maintenance will supervise various aspects and functions of the repair and preventative maintenance of vehicles & equipment, owned and operated by the Toronto Paramedic Services Division, during an assigned shift.

The Superintendent Fleet Maintenance manages an efficient garage operation with a high standard of customer service, ensuring compliance with legislated, scheduled maintenance programs and is accountable to meet maintenance delivery timelines.

Ensuring adherence to City Policy, Human Rights Code, and other legislation, the Supervisor leads a team of maintenance professionals and works collaboratively with their Fleet peers to contribute to the ongoing development, implementation and roll out of new and innovative maintenance programs.

A seasoned mechanical expert, you will manage and assign work to produce the best use of human and physical resources to ensure vehicle compliance to legislative requirements and timely turnaround of vehicle maintenance.

As a Fleet expert you collaboratively with operating units within the division, coaching on preventative maintenance programs, in particular, identifying methods to minimize vehicle failure, improve total cost of ownership and educate on driver/vehicle behaviour and best practices.

Promoting the use of accurate vehicle and equipment records, as a Superintendent you understand the need to demonstrate compliance with legislation as well as being a valuable source of information on the potential design and procurement of future vehicles.

As the leader of your maintenance team, you will be involved in all aspects of staff hiring, providing input into vendor contract documentation/vendor management, as well as, support client and Fleet Procurement in future vehicle purchases.

Major Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities as a Fleet Maintenance Superintendent will be varied, but priorities will include:

  • Implement detailed plans and recommend policies/procedures regarding fleet maintenance program-specific requirements and ensure they are uniformly understood and effectively carried out by the vehicle maintenance staff to support the Division's strategic vision
  • Supervise, motivate and train assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, and continuous learning, and encouraging innovation in others.
  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of all assigned fleet maintenance staff, including scheduling, reviewing and monitoring the completion of assigned work, authorizing and coordinating vacation/overtime and evaluating staff performance, hearing grievances and recommending disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Provide input into, and administer, assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations, including management of external parts & service contracts.
  • Administer and prioritize maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair of Divisional vehicles and equipment.
