The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division offers a challenging opportunity for an experienced lawyer to act as an Assistant Crown Attorney under the Dangerous Offender/Long-Term Offender Initiative. The incumbent will take a senior, specialized role to assist in the administration of justice in High Risk Offender criminal matters, with a primary focus on the efficient prosecution of Section 810.1 and s.
810.2 and Part XXIV criminal matters. The role reports directly to the Director of Crown Operations, Toronto Region.
Step 1:
All regular/fixed‑term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members. Step 2:
In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non‑members of the above‑mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.
- Perform or assist in prosecutions of High Risk Offender matters in the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice.
- Provide mentoring, training and support to prosecutors engaged in Part XXIV hearings and s. 810.1 and 810.2 applications.
- Prepare precedents, motions, factums, draft orders and notices to assist trial Crowns in the prosecutions of High Risk Offenders.
- Offer professional advice to police, related agencies and the public on criminal matters and conduct special justice‑related High Risk Offender projects and community programmes as required.
- Act as Regional Coordinator for High Risk Offender Prosecutions.
- Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Working knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedures, rules of evidence and case law.
- Demonstrated experience in Part XXIV hearings and related applications.
- Understanding of the role and function of a prosecutor in the criminal justice system in Ontario.
- Experience or readiness to conduct prosecutions in the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice.
- Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies.
- Demonstrated research and analytical ability to organize a principled approach to cases and issues.
- Demonstrated writing and advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team within the criminal justice system and with community stakeholders.
- Technical ability to work effectively with computer technology and databases available to professional staff.
