The new appointment will join a team of eight Medical Gastroenterologists (six luminal, two liver) who work as a single team, sharing responsibility for the management of inpatients. Management of outpatients is split into the liver and luminal teams. We have an excellent day‑case unit exclusively for GI services which, along with our three hepatology specialist nurses, allows us to deliver ambulatory care for patients with liver disease including nurse‑led early discharge clinic, monitoring and assessment of patients with acute and chronic liver disease and day‑case paracentesis.
The department has received significant investment over the last 18 months, with a new £4.99 million unit which opened in December 2023. Candidates should be independent in OGD; candidates who are trained in colonoscopy and wish to continue with this may be accommodated. Training is an important element of our practice at Torbay and our new colleague would be encouraged to engage with the delivery of courses and in‑house training.
- Support the current Gastroenterology and Hepatology teams in delivering inpatient and outpatient care
- Work closely with consultant staff in related specialties (upper and lower GI surgery)
- Contribute to audit within Hepatology and to research if interested
- Contribute to the training of trainee staff and medical students
- Undertake clinical and/or educational supervision of trainees
- Undertake CME/CPD in accordance with the Royal College of Physicians requirements
- Actively contribute to clinical governance within our organisation
The Gastroenterology unit is a lively, innovative and cohesive department. South Devon is an area of exceptional natural beauty, with outstanding opportunities for both dryland and water‑based activities and a very mild climate. Schools in the area are excellent in both state and private sectors, with a selective grammar school system. We offer a generous relocation package, which can be discussed with the successful candidate.
