Job Summary
We are seeking a Band 5 NMC registered nurse to join our Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), a Level 1 Neonatal Unit with 10 cots (2 HDU, 4 Special Care and a 4‑bed Transitional Care unit). The unit cares for babies from 32 weeks gestation and works closely with the Peninsula Neonatal Transport Team and the Southwest Neonatal Network.
Responsibilities- Provide safe, effective and compassionate nursing care to neonates requiring special care, high dependency or intensive care.
- Undertake comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised care plans in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
- Monitor and record infants’ clinical condition, including vital signs, feeding tolerance, respiratory support and developmental progress, escalating concerns appropriately.
- Support and educate parents and families, promoting family‑centred care and encouraging parental involvement.
- Deliver high‑quality nursing care in accordance with local, service line and Trust policies.
- Participate in Southwest Neonatal Network service development and evidence‑based practice initiatives.
- Work within flexible hours (07:30‑20:00 and 19:30‑08:00) to support work‑life balance.
Essential
- First level qualification – RN (Child), RSCN, RN (Adult), RGN or RM
- Current registration with the NMC
- Clinical and practical nursing skills
- Awareness of evidence‑based practice
- Evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable
- Degree in Nursing
- Special & Intensive/High Dependency Care Neonatal modules
- NLS Provider qualification
- Recent neonatal experience at Level 1, 2 or 3
- Enhanced clinical practice skills (IV, cannulation, venepuncture)
- Experience of teaching and mentorship
Weekly simulation training, structured development from Band 6 into advanced neonatal and leadership roles, flexible 11.5‑hour shifts covering days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
