Clinical Coding Trainer

We are seeking an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer to join the Torbay and South Devon (TSD) Clinical Coding Team. The role delivers a comprehensive training programme for Clinical Coding trainees and apprentices and supports the wider coding workforce. It promotes high‑quality clinical coding across the Trust and deepens colleagues’ understanding of coding standards and processes.

Applicants must be NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainers. We will also consider applicants who have secured a place on the NHS England 2026/27 Clinical Coding Training Programme (CCTP) Assessment Day 26 June.

Main duties of the job

The main purpose is to work with the Clinical Coding Management team to:

  • Develop, plan and deliver training courses, workshops and ad‑hoc sessions for clinical coders and related staff.
  • Conduct induction for new staff, advise the Coding Manager on ongoing training and development needs, and act as a mentor for novice coders.
  • Assess learning needs and shape trainee pathways.
  • Implement and deliver regular training sessions for clinical coders.
  • Develop and update training materials, ensure adherence to national coding standards, and support the production of case‑study training content.
  • Provide coaching, conduct feedback sessions and resolve coding inaccuracies in a professional manner.
  • Act as a point of contact for the Clinical Coding Department and contribute to policy and procedural development.
Person Specification Qualifications and training
  • NHS Digital Approved Experienced Clinical Coding Trainer Qualification
  • Training Deliver Skills (Training Foundation/TAP) Certificate
  • National Clinical Coding Qualification
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Anatomy and Physiology qualification
Knowledge and experience
  • Expert knowledge of the structures and application of clinical classifications – ICD‑10 & OPCS.
  • Expert knowledge of Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to explain complex coding terminology to a variety of contacts and stakeholders.
  • Report writing skills.
Specific skills
  • Extensive coding experience – more than 3 years post ACC working in an Acute Trust.
  • Experience of working with clinicians and senior managers, specifically around clinical engagement and education.

Salary: £39,959 to £48,117 per annum pro rata.
