Prison officer - HMP Channings Wood

Location:

Torquay, South West.

Starting salary: £35,875 (for a 39 hour week inc 20% unsocial).

Vacancy type: Merit.

Job Description

Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners’ lives. The role involves a fast‑paced environment where you will work as a peacekeeper, counsellor and teacher, building constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Protecting the public and ensuring the safety of the prison environment.
  • Providing support and guidance to prisoners, fostering positive relationships.
  • Working as part of a team, acting as one to maintain safety.
  • Supporting various shifts, including weekends and nights.
Eligibility
  • Be at least 18 years old at commencement.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment.
  • Meet eyesight standard in both eyes.
  • Have hearing standard suitable for the role.
  • Tattoos must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating.
  • For category A prisons, be a UK resident for 3 years.

Pay
  • 37 hours a week = £33,746 a year.
  • 39 hours a week = £35,875 a year.
  • 41 hours a week = £38,003 a year.

All salary figures include any additional allowances applicable to the role/location.
