Position OverviewUnder direction of the Athletic Director, the Head Coach is responsible for developing, leading, supervising and sustaining an athletic program by which students will gain an appreciation for discipline, hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Provide instruction in the fundamental skills and knowledge of the sport or activity.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Coach individual participants in mechanics and skills necessary for successful participation/achievement in the sport.
- Coordinate and supervise a regular practice schedule.
- Encourage sportsmanship, fair play and team unity, and enforce and demonstrate ethical conduct on and off the field.
- Enforce contest, school, conference and state rules and regulations.
- Enforce the Appoquinimink School District and DIAA policies for athletic eligibility.
- Supervise assistant coaches and enhance their professional development (when applicable).
- Monitor the safety conditions and accountability issues involving students and facilities.
- Maintain accurate records of uniforms/equipment inventories, individual and team statistics, and accomplishments.
- Maintain and submit required forms and athletic documents.
- Recommend purchase of equipment and supplies.
- Effectively communicate with administration, players, parents, assistant coaches, media and community.
- Attend all required coaches’ meetings including clinics and State and conference selection meetings.
- Keep the school sports website page up to date and submit all scores in a timely manner.
- Develop a total program for grades 9 through 12.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, coaches, and community using approved Appoquinimink School District communication methods.
- Experience coaching/participating in applicable sport at the high school or collegiate level.
- Knowledge of NFHS applicable sport Rules, DIAA Rules and Regulations, Blue Hen Conference Regulations, and ASD Policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic First Aid/Athletic Training Practices.
- Excellent organizational skills.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time.
Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment or outdoors. Work may require the ability to move around the school, gymnasiums, or athletic fields. Duties may be performed away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
Pre-employment Requirements- All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
