Position: Deputy Sheriff (For Current and Retired Law Enforcement Officers - Lateral)

Pay Schedule XIII, Grade 6S, Regular

Schedule:

40 hours per week

Recruit Employment Bonus

The Sheriff’s Office will award a Hiring Bonus of $12,000 for Experienced Current and Retired Law Enforcement Officers.

The bonus will be paid in three (3) equal payments at the time of hire; after training; and after completion of probationary status.

Salary will be commensurate with level of experience, up to $64,432.

You MUST meet the following requirements before you can be hired in the above classification:

  • Have at least two (2) years' experience as a Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff;
  • Current MPCTC certification or have been MPCTC certified within the last three (3) years which includes firearms qualification;
  • Must be in good standing at current agency with no pending internal investigations, or have retired within the past 3 years in good standing;
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or an appropriate equivalent;
  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time you submit your application;
  • Satisfactorily complete a medical examination;
  • Must be a citizen of the United States;
  • Must be of good moral character and emotionally stable, as determined by a comprehensive background investigation, psychological screening, polygraph examination, and periodic drug testing.

    Under general supervision, performs responsible law enforcement and regulatory work which includes serving civil and criminal process, making arrests, maintaining courtroom security, and maintaining security of and transporting prisoners
    • Serves summonses, writs, body attachments, warrants, ex-parte orders and similar court documents.
    • Enforces court orders by making criminal and civil arrests, collecting judgements, taking possession of property, and conducting Sheriff's sales and levies of chattels, goods, and real property.
    • Conducts applicant investigations and other investigations concerning Sheriff's Office business and at the request of the Circuit Court of Baltimore County.
    • Maintains peace and security of the courts, the courts building complex, and judicial employees.
    • Maintains custody and transportation of inmates, prisoners, and detainees to and from court proceedings, courthouses, detention, correctional and rehabilitational facilities throughout the State of Maryland.
    • Carries, maintains, trains, and is proficient in the use of a firearm. Operates a radio-equipped County vehicle.
    • Operates radio, telephone, and other communications devices. Completes written reports.
    • Functions as a field training officer for probationary Deputy Sheriffs. Participates in a variety of training.
    Examples of Other Duties
    Maintains vehicles. Participates in public relations duties by speaking to school, civic, and other groups regarding functions of the Sheriff's Office. May perform clerical duties. Performs other related duties as required.

    Licenses and Certificates

    Certification as a Deputy Sheriff by the Maryland Police Training Commission,which includes firearms qualification, is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
