The Painter performs painting work at the journey level by preparing surfaces for painting, plastering and/or applying paint to building interiors, exteriors, road and parking surfaces. The Painter provides estimates for paint jobs, selects appropriate colors, ensures products used are correctly applied and follows the material safety data sheets (MSDS) as directed. The typical work schedule is Mon‑Fri from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

• Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces.
• Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, sandpapering or dissolving previous paint coatings. Fills nail holes, cracks and joints with caulk or putty. Tapes, spackles and finishes drywall. Removes fixtures, spreads drop cloths and covers surfaces to protect during painting.
• Selects, mixes and matches paints. Operates and maintains tools and equipment of the painting trade. May erect and work from scaffolding and ladders.
• Cleans work area upon completion of project.
• Prepares estimates of time, labor and materials. Prepares reports reflecting daily operations and project status.
• Provides guidance and training in painting work to other maintenance personnel. May have lead responsibility for special projects.

• Four years progressively responsible experience in the painting trade.
• Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques used in the painting trade.
• Proficiency in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
• Familiarity with OSHA regulations related to the painting trade.
• Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the painting trade.
• Ability to schedule and lay out work; perceive normal color spectrum; prepare summaries and reports; communicate effectively and follow oral and written directions.
• Capability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; from ladders; rigging; scaffolding; manipulate heavy equipment up to 70 lbs; concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions; wear and work in personal protective equipment.
• Medical screening may be required to determine ability to perform the job. Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations.
• Valid Maryland non‑commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license required.
• Candidates may be required to be trained to work with asbestos.
• Educational or experiential equivalencies are permitted: 30 college credits are equivalent to one year of experience.

$46,736 annually and full University benefits that include annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days, excellent health, life, and retirement plans, and tuition remission. When applicable, a 2.5 % increase may be added to the annual salary, pending successful completion of the initial six‑month probationary period, for this position.
