Position: Traffic Signal Maintenance Technician I

Position Overview

Pay Schedule II, Grade H 19, Regular

Schedule:

40 hours per week. Vacancy in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Transportation. This posting may close at any time with little or no notice.

Responsibilities

• Participates and assists in field and bench repair and installation of electronic traffic control devices such as signals, vehicle detectors, and signal controllers.
• Participates in modification of traffic signal control systems.
• Sets and adjusts signal timings and controller programs.
• Assists in troubleshooting, pre‑wiring, testing, and installing traffic signal control cabinets and related equipment.
• Performs general maintenance and inspection of traffic signals and related equipment.
• Replaces hoods, lenses, and bulbs.
• Participates in monitoring and analysis of data generated by traffic signal control computer systems and local intersection controllers.
• Answers maintenance and repair calls during regular working hours and on an emergency basis.

Other Duties

• Maintains the repair shop. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
• Two years' experience in electronics repair or repair and maintenance of electronic traffic signal systems (additional education may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis).
• Traffic Signal Level I certification may substitute for one year of experience;
  Level II may substitute for two years.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of principles and practices of electronics repair or traffic signal equipment repair; solid state electronics; safety standards and procedures.
• Skill in operation and care of electronic or traffic signal repair tools.
• Ability to repair traffic signal control systems, microprocessors, solid state devices, and related equipment; program traffic signal control systems and devices; operate electronic diagnostic equipment and test equipment; perform interconnect cabling and wiring; use personal computers and traffic signal control related software; read and interpret blueprints and schematic diagrams; work at various heights; maintain effective working relationships.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license.

Proof of Licenses, Certifications, and Education

Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications, and education beyond high school. Failure to submit proof will result in non‑consideration.

Examination Procedure

Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience as stated on their application. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly for evaluation purposes.

Conditions of Employment

Employees are subject to call to duty in emergencies and may be required to work overtime with little or no notice.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Work involves heavy physical labor such as bending, stooping, and lifting heavy objects, operation of hand and power tools, and exposure to potential hazards including heights, traffic, adverse weather, and live electrical wires.
