Duties- Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in a full range of emergency response: fire, emergency medical, specialized rescue, and natural disasters.
- Controls and extinguishes fires, operates hose lines and performs fire‑ground operations including forcible entry, ventilation, search & rescue, salvage, and overhaul.
- Drives and operates a full range of complex vehicles and apparatus: fire engines, ladder trucks, technical rescue apparatus, medic units, and response trailers with onboard systems.
- Performs advanced patient assessment, including systematic evaluation, interpretation of electrocardiograms (EKG) as permitted by certification and local protocols.
- Performs advanced airway techniques (esophageal or dual‑lumen airway device, oral intubation with laryngoscopy) and assists paramedic personnel in advanced life support in a developmental capacity.
- Alternates as Lead Firefighter responsible for directing and participating in firefighting activities, fire prevention functions, station and equipment maintenance, training, and administrative duties.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Tour of Duty: 144 hours per pay period; position is subject to shift rotation and abnormal tours.

Yes. - Must complete a pre‑employment and annual medical exam IAW DoD 6055.05‑M and a post‑employment medical exam IAW DoD 6055.06‑M.
- Must possess a REAL other acceptable identification for federal facility access.
- Mission Essential Position:
The incumbent may be required to report for work during natural disasters, inclement weather, or a crisis.
- Specialized
Experience:
One year of specialized experience directly related to the duties of the position (GS‑07 or GS‑08 level experience as required). Experience must meet eligibility, time‑in‑grade, and other regulatory requirements. - GS‑07:
Assisting in full firefighting duties, rescue operations, EMT‑Basic life support, and determining emergency response needs. - GS‑08:
Performing full firefighting duties, assisting or performing rescue operations, emergency medical care at intermediate/advanced level, and operating emergency vehicles. - Driver Operator Certification requirements are determined locally based on duty assignments.
- DoD
Certifications:
Minimum mandatory certifications include Firefighter I & II. Local certifications may include EMT‑Paramedic, CPR, and other state certifications for Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, California. - Minimum Age Requirement:
Applicant must be under 37 years of age at appointment, or meet the special retirement coverage conditions if 37 or older.
The job requires extended periods of heavy moving and lifting, frequent bending, stooping, and handling firefighting equipment. Protective gear may weigh up to 100 pounds, and work is performed in extreme heat, cold, and hazardous conditions.
Work EnvironmentThe employee works outdoors in all weather conditions, is exposed to uncontrolled fires, emergency medical scenes, burns, smoke inhalation, heat, falling materials, explosions, and toxic substances.
