Directional Drill Operator – MPS Group

We are seeking a skilled Directional Drill Operator to join our team in Traverse City, MI. The ideal candidate will operate and oversee directional drilling equipment for the installation of underground utilities such as telecommunications, electrical, and water lines. A strong focus on safety, precision, and teamwork is required.

Shift Details

Shift: 1st Shift – Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and oversee directional drilling equipment to install underground utilities with precision and accuracy.
  • Perform drill set‑up and ensure proper operation of directional bore/drill equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that may arise during drilling operations.
  • Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate drilling locations and effective installation.
  • Follow project specifications and work diligently to avoid obstructions and damage to existing infrastructure.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections of drilling equipment to maintain optimal performance.
  • Ensure all safety protocols and regulations are followed on‑site.
  • Assist with construction cleanup and other job‑site tasks as needed.
  • Participate in trench and manhole operations as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with the team.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of heavy equipment operation experience, specifically in directional drilling.
  • Proven experience as a Directional Drill Operator/Locator or similar role.
  • Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills, able to work in various conditions.
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and maps.
  • Familiarity with maintaining and operating directional drilling equipment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and protocols related to directional drilling.
  • Valid CDL Class A driver’s license required.
  • OSHA 10 certification and Operator Qualifications (or ability to obtain).
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
