ASL Interpreter and Coordinator )

Position Overview

The ASL Interpreter and Coordinator provides high-quality interpreting services to Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a variety of academic and campus settings. In addition, this position serves as the primary coordinator for interpreting and captioning services, managing scheduling, freelance interpreters, and related resources to ensure effective communication access across the college.

This dual role requires fluency in American Sign Language, strong organizational skills, and the ability to balance direct interpreting assignments with administrative oversight of communication access services.

Responsibilities Interpreting
  • Provide professional, ethical, and accurate interpreting/transliterating between spoken English and American Sign Language in academic classes, meetings, events, and campus activities.
  • Maintain compliance with RID Code of Professional Conduct and institutional standards.
  • Adapt language and communication style to match the needs of Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals, including consideration of regional and cultural variations.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing class materials, agendas, or event content.
  • Support communication access in both in-person and virtual/remote environments.
Coordination & Administration
  • Coordinate scheduling of freelance interpreters, captionists, and related service providers to ensure coverage for all eligible requests.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for interpreting and captioning services, responding to requests from students, faculty, and staff.
  • Monitor service usage, track hours, and manage invoicing and budget records for external vendors.
  • Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and evaluating freelance interpreters and captionists.
  • Develop and maintain internal protocols, policies, and resources related to interpreting and captioning.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure timely and equitable provision of communication access.
  • Provide outreach and training to faculty, staff, and students on effective use of interpreters and captioning services.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies, Interpretation, Linguistics, Communication, Education, or related field.
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or equivalent (i.e., RID certification).
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional interpreting experience in educational or related settings.
  • Demonstrated fluency in ASL and spoken/written English.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, ADA/Section 504, and best practices for communication access in higher education.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.

Preferred:

  • Experience coordinating interpreting/captioning services in higher education or similar environments.
  • Familiarity with remote interpreting platforms, CART captioning, and assistive technology.
  • Supervisory or vendor management experience.
  • RID Specialist Certificate (e.g., SC:

    L, CDI).
Working Conditions
  • Position requires flexibility in schedule to cover occasional evening/weekend events.
  • Work may involve both in-person and remote/virtual interpreting assignments.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and interpret for extended periods.
