Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Part‑Time Staff Nurse for the New Jersey State Prison, located in Trenton, NJ.

The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health‑care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus for inmates in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of resident‑patients, including adolescents (13‑17 years) and adults (18‑64 years), and their families within the correctional framework.
  • Perform assessments of resident‑patients in a range of settings such as initial intake area, health‑care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary.
  • Collaborate with a variety of health‑care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment.
  • Identify inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives and implement prescribed interventions and solutions for identified problems.
  • Plan nursing care based on assessment findings, making timely referrals and initiating appropriate care in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.
  • As team leader or charge nurse, delegate duties to other health‑care team members based on skill, knowledge and experience, and guide the provision of care by others.
Salary Details

Minimum Salary: $37,230
Mid‑Range Salary: $46,540
Maximum Salary: $54,050

Qualifications

Minimum

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing

Certifications / Licenses:

  • License to practice in the State of New Jersey
  • CPR Certification required
  • Valid Driver’s License required; must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes and be able to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds, as well as assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).

Special Conditions

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
