Position: CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I - Trinidad Correctional Facility.

Note: This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at Trinidad Correctional Facility. Opportunities span the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Overview

This is a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting for the Correctional Officer I (CO I) position at Trinidad Correctional Facility (TCF). TCF is a Level 2 Minimum Restrictive facility, designed to accommodate up to 500 inmates, located 15 miles east of Trinidad, Colorado. The facility focuses on safety and security and supports offender reintegration through programs such as RESTORE and an Honor House Unit.

TCF offers a range of academic, vocational, cognitive education, life skills, and community support programs to prepare inmates for re-entry.

Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process. Applicants should review Administrative Regulations (AR) 100s and 300s series on the CDOC website to prepare for the comparative analysis process. The assessment scores may be used for future announcements.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain the safety and security of CDOC facilities, support the CDOC mission, and prepare inmates for community reentry.
  • Interact professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the public.
  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility; monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
  • Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required); monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians or vehicles.
  • Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment, and alarms; control inmate movement and escort/transport inmates in state vehicles.
  • Monitor visiting areas; conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts; cross-check and maintain movement logs.
  • Conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, and vehicle searches); inspect facility and cells for health, safety, and sanitation.
  • Inspect inmate mail and property; respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established protocols.
  • Attend roll calls; document incidents using approved reporting practices; communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
  • Be available to work additional hours/shifts to maintain facility safety and security (24/7 operations).
Minimum Qualifications , Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or GED.

  • Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment during the application process.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify. CDOC does not sponsor non-residents.
  • Must be at least 18 years old; possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Former state employees with disciplinary terminations or resignations must disclose information; extraordinary circumstances apply for eligibility.
  • Must pass a background investigation and health screening; consent to hold harmless CDOC from testing information usage.
  • Successfully complete all modules of CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics assessments and exams.
  • Possess the physical ability to perform Defensive Tactics and related activities (listed movements and conditioning).
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, weekends, holidays; may be assigned to 24/7 operations.
  • Must be willing to use physical force as trained and be able to operate firearms and security devices safely.
  • Must be able to work in a locked facility with fluctuating conditions; travel and transport inmates as required.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) screening is required for all new employees.
