Position SummaryThe Surgical Technician serves as a member of the healthcare team and provides technical support to the surgeon, registered nurse, and anesthesiologist in the operating room. The role includes scrubbing, assisting the RN circulator, setting up and breaking down surgical procedures, pulling and putting away supplies and equipment, and performing environmental service duties.
Duties & Responsibilities- Cleans operating room between cases.
- Ensures proper supplies, equipment, and instruments are ready for use.
- Restocks operating rooms to meet par levels.
- Assists other operating rooms for coverage.
- Familiar with surgeon preferences, procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Prepares cases for the next day.
- Operates sterilizer, lights, suction machine, and other designated equipment.
- Ensures patient, procedure, operative site, positioning, and equipment correspondence.
- Follows exposure control plans for blood-borne and airborne pathogens.
- Reports observed or suspected breaches in sterile technique and follows policy.
- Performs hand scrub per policy and procedure.
- Arranges instruments and supplies for surgical procedures.
- Maintains integrity of instruments.
- Ensures proper counting of sponges, instruments, and sharps.
- Assists in gowning and draping of patient and personnel.
- Anticipates surgeon’s needs.
- Passes instruments to surgeon and/or assistant as appropriate.
- Communicates needs to circulators to ensure efficient procedure flow.
- Prepares and preserves specimens.
- Verifies name, strength, and dosage of medication with circulator; labels and places on surgical field.
- Cleans and disinfects all tables, counter surfaces, stands, and floor.
- Assists with patient transport and operating room restocking.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology.
- CST certification verified via NBSTSA.
- BLS certification.
Preferred:
- One year of current surgical tech experience in an OR setting.
