This is a long-term contract opportunity offering a pay range of $45.00 to $55.00 per hour, determined by your verified professional background.
Role Overview
As a Laser Scanner Technician II/III, you will utilize metrology tools and laser scanning technology to assist with manufacturing launches, tooling validation, facility upgrades, dimensional analysis, and ongoing process improvements. Your daily tasks involve conducting precise inspections on production components, fixtures, tooling, and equipment to verify they meet customer standards and engineering blueprints. You will coordinate frequently with departments such as Quality, Product and Manufacturing Engineering, Launch, Maintenance, and Tooling.
Those at the T3 level are tasked with acting as subject matter experts, guiding complex scanning initiatives, providing mentorship to less experienced staff, and assisting with cross-functional troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute 3D laser scanning and dimensional evaluations for assemblies, components, dies, fixtures, and production machinery.
- Produce precise point cloud datasets and perform CAD comparisons utilizing specialized metrology programs.
- Evaluate dimensional variances to pinpoint deviations and prepare detailed measurement summaries to help drive quality improvements.
- Provide essential support for production launches, tooling trials, validation tasks, and engineering modifications.
- Carry out first-piece inspections and comprehensive product dimensional studies to ensure manufacturing accuracy.
- Partner with engineering departments to assess manufacturing capabilities and overall tooling performance.
- Contribute to root cause analysis efforts regarding fit-up issues, quality concerns, and dimensional discrepancies.
- Ensure all metrology and laser scanning hardware remains calibrated and accurate.
- Refine and establish best practices, measurement techniques, and scanning procedures.
- Travel to various production sites to assist with facility-specific measurement needs, tooling adjustments, and launch-related challenges.
- Provide support for projects across Mexico, Canada, and the United States as necessary.
- Adhere to all environmental, quality, and safety protocols to maintain a secure workplace for the entire team.
Qualifications
Education
- An Associate degree in Metrology, Quality Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
- Candidates may be considered if they possess an equivalent mix of professional experience and education.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years working in automotive manufacturing, laser scanning, metrology, or dimensional inspection roles.
- Proven track record of leading complex launch-related or measurement projects to successful outcomes.
Technical Skills
- Expertise in 3D Laser Scanner systems, with a primary focus on FARO.
- Familiarity with alternative systems such as Leica, Hexagon, ZEISS, or Creaform is advantageous.
- Strong background in metrology software, specifically Poly Works.
- Experience with platforms like GOM Inspect, PC-DMIS, Spatial Analyzer, or Geomagic is beneficial.
- Capacity to interpret complex GD&T and engineering drawings.
- Ability to evaluate scan data and CAD models to support data-driven decision-making.
- Skill in generating inspection documentation and dimensional reports.
- Competency in performing problem diagnosis and tolerance analysis.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, automotive tooling, and dimensional control strategies.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and statistical measurement concepts.
Physical and Competency Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and perform tasks involving walking, standing, and bending.
- Comfortable working within industrial tooling and manufacturing environments.
- Capable of working near heavy machinery and accessing elevated platforms or ladders.
- Willingness to travel for domestic and international assignments.
- Demonstrated proficiency in project planning, analytical thinking, technical problem-solving, communication, collaboration, accountability, and a focus on continuous improvement.
