For over 70 years, St. Vincent's Special Needs Services (SVSNS) has been a trusted provider of specialized services for children and adults with multiple developmental disabilities and complex medical needs, such as cerebral palsy, acute brain injury, neuromuscular disorders and autism spectrum disorders. Whenever possible, our programs are inclusive, offering individuals with special needs and those without special needs opportunities to participate in activities side by side, learning from each other.

In all our programs, we are committed to assisting those with special needs to live as fully and independently as each is able in the richness of community life. Our programs for children and their families originate from the FEROLETO Children’s Development Center in Trumbull, Connecticut. We also offer an Adult Day Program in Stratford with several sites for supported employment located within businesses and corporations in the community.

Our eight group homes for adults are located in Bridgeport, Trumbull, Stratford, Shelton, Monroe, and Newtown. One residential home for adults with multiple disabilities and complex medical needs who require 24‑hour nursing care is located in Stratford. More than 400 children, adults and their families come through our doors to attend programs and receive services each year.

Position Summary

The Director will provide the leadership and direction for St. Vincent’s Special Needs school program which provides special education for students whose needs cannot be met by their local public schools. The Director will be responsible for the strategic planning and development of the organizational goals while continuously evaluating the delivery of services from a global perspective, making recommendations and taking action to improve the program offerings and solutions.

Accountabilities
  • Directs the development of school policies, procedures, and staffing plans to ensure effective and efficient daily operations and long‑term effectiveness
  • Ensures compliance with all Department of Education standards, regulations, and reporting requirements
  • Ensures services are provided in compliance with established standards, best practice and meet licensing, regulatory and legal requirements
  • Develops, implements and monitors the Quality Improvement plan and Department Safety plan, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and company standards
  • Develops and implements detailed metrics to measure the effectiveness of strategies. Establish a continuous improvement work environment that maximizes staff resources, enhances quality of services, and provides appropriate cost controls
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends to effectively provide strategic direction and solutions
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of curriculum, assessment and instructional materials in collaboration with School Principal and Assistant School Principal
  • Prepares and manages the budgets of all components of the Special Needs School, including annual preparation of budgets and capital requests to ensure appropriate and effective allocation of resources to support operations
  • Manages the operational activities of the school, including leadership of the school’s Principal and staff. Provides developmental opportunities for employees through a comprehensive orientation program, clear performance standards and appropriate feedback through the performance appraisal process
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree is required
  • Five plus years of Special Education teaching or related services
  • Three plus years of educational administrative experience, including Department Head, Coordinator, or Supervisor
  • Certified Educator specializing in Special Education credentialed from the Connecticut Department of Education is required
