Consultant - Paediatric Anaesthesia

Job Summary

Applications are invited for this exciting opportunity to join the anaesthetic team of 64 Consultants and 8 SAS doctors at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The department is a dynamic, forward‑thinking and innovative department covering a wide range of specialties. We deliver anaesthesia across four sites – the Royal Cornwall Hospital, St Michael's Hospital, West Cornwall Hospital and St Austell Surgical Hub.

We are looking for a General Anaesthesia Consultant with an interest in Paediatrics.

• To establish Anaesthesia as integral to the peri‑operative outcomes of paediatric surgery.
• Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of Anaesthesia.
• Share responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the Anaesthetic department.
• Teach and train anaesthetists in training, resident doctors and medical students where applicable.
• Ensure active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
• Participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
• Participate in quality improvement, data analysis and information presentation, and service development, as appropriate.
• Attend care group and directorate business, operational and governance meetings as appropriate.
• Fulfil duties of weekly timetable including any out‑of‑hours responsibilities.
• Deliver pre‑operative assessment sessions.

• GMC registration.
• GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) in Anaesthetics at time of interview.
• FRCA or equivalent.
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a broad range of problems in Anaesthesia.
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
• Pediatric Anaesthesia at Advanced Level, e.g. a minimum of 6 months Stage 3 Special Interest Area (SIA) in Paediatric Anaesthesia.
• Experience in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance.
• Emergency CEPOD and Trauma experience.
• Ultrasound‑guided venous access and Regional Anaesthesia skills.

• APLS.
• Management of Multidisciplinary Teams.
• Specialist expertise in Paediatric Transfer Medicine, Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine, Professional Management and Leadership.
