Consultant Anaesthetist - General Anaesthesia

Applications are invited for this exciting opportunity to join the anaesthetic team of 68 Consultants and 8 SAS doctors at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The department is a dynamic, forward‑thinking and innovative department covering a wide range of specialties. We deliver anaesthesia across four sites: the Royal Cornwall Hospital, St Michael’s Hospital, West Cornwall Hospital and St Austell Surgical Hub.

The hospital is a major district‑general hospital, a major trauma unit, a vascular centre, with comprehensive cancer services, providing over 30 000 anaesthetics per year and more than 4 000 births, with over 750 beds. We have 27 operating theatres and anaesthesia delivery areas and 18 critical‑care beds, and further expansion is planned, including new obstetric, paediatric and additional theatres.

General Anaesthesia.

The successful applicant will take part in the general on‑call rota (approximately 1 in 30) and provide long‑day (08.00‑20.30) CEPOD or trauma emergency theatre provision on approximately ten occasions per year.

• Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of anaesthesia.
• Share with colleagues the responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the anaesthetic department.
• Teach and train junior staff and medical students where applicable.
• Ensure active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
• Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.
• Participate in quality improvement, data analysis and information presentation, and service development as appropriate.
• Attend care‑group and directorate business, operational and governance meetings as appropriate.
• Fulfil duties of the weekly timetable, including any out‑of‑hours responsibilities.
• Deliver pre‑operative assessment and cardiopulmonary exercise testing sessions and contribute to the development of digital peri‑operative medicine (POM) pathways.

Qualifications – Essential:

• GMC registration.
• GMC specialist register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) in anaesthetics at the time of interview.
• FRCA or equivalent.

Qualifications – Desirable:

• Peri‑operative medicine specialist interest area.
• CPET competency.

Experience – Essential:

• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a broad range of problems in anaesthesia.
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
• Experience in clinical audit and clinical governance and the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients and ensuring this is embedded in clinical practice.
• Experience in pre‑assessment to higher competency.
• Emergency CEPOD and trauma experience.

Experience – Desirable:

• Professional management and leadership.
• Duty‑floor anaesthetist systems of emergency support and acute theatre staff and patient scheduling.
• Post‑anaesthetic level 1.5 care experience.
• Extensive transfer experience across all age ranges.
