Security Guard - Nova Institute

Security Guard – Nova Scotia

Competition Number: CNS 2026‑05‑15

Reports to:

Site Supervisor

Rate of Pay: $21.27 per hour (variable depending on site contracts; some sites are unionized).

Working Hours:

On‑call position, 8–12‑hour shifts, various hours/days of the week.

• Protect personnel, property, assets, and confidential information.
• Conduct routine foot patrols and perimeter inspections, indoors and outdoors.
• Escort contractors and visitors through secured areas.
• Report incidents, concerns, and operational updates to the Site Supervisor.
• Prepare accurate and detailed incident and daily activity reports.
• Monitor, operate, and respond to security alarms and surveillance systems.
• Maintain a safe and secure work environment while promoting health and safety practices.
• Adhere to all CNS Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality policies and client site requirements.
• Follow all CNS policies, Site Work Instructions, and supervisor directions.
• Perform additional duties as required, including patrol operations, reception and administrative support, access control, emergency response, and incident management.
• Contractor escorting through various facilities.
• Key control.

Eligible candidates must:

• Be female.
• Be 19 years of age or older.
• Be eligible to work in Canada.
• Not have a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
• Provide fingerprints and complete a criminal record check.
• Be eligible to apply for Government of Canada personnel security screening.
• Communicate effectively in English; bilingualism is an asset.

• Professional and detail‑driven with a strong work ethic and a “Can Do” attitude.
• Mental alertness with ability to react calmly and quickly in crisis situations, remain alert for up to 12 hours, communicate observations, and exercise sound judgement.
• Physical fitness to climb stairs, navigate uneven terrain in all weather, stand for extended periods, and maintain dexterity and balance.
• Superior attention to detail, excellent customer service skills, good verbal communication, and, if possible, computer literacy.
• First Aid certification.
• Successful completion of the Commissionaires Security Officer Course (online and/or in‑class).
• Proof of mental and physical fitness (fitness test).

• Use of Force certified.
• Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces or RCMP.
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention trained.
• Valid Nova Scotia driver’s licence or reliable transportation.
• Bilingualism (French/English).
