Security Guard – Nova Institute

Reports to:
Site Supervisor
Rate of Pay: $21.27 per hour (variable by site contract; some sites are unionized)
Working Hours:
On‑call, 8–12 hour shifts at various hours and days of the week.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES- Protect personnel, property, assets, and confidential information
- Conduct routine foot patrols and perimeter inspections, both indoors and outdoors
- Escort contractors and visitors through secured areas and facilities
- Report incidents, concerns, and operational updates to the Site Supervisor
- Prepare accurate and detailed incident and daily activity reports
- Monitor, operate, and respond to security alarms and surveillance systems
- Maintain a safe and secure work environment while promoting health and safety practices
- Adhere to all CNS Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality policies, procedures, and standards, as well as those of client sites
- Follow all CNS policies, Site Work Instructions, and directions provided by supervisors
- Perform additional duties as required, including patrol operations, reception and administrative support, access control, emergency response, and incident management

- 19 years of age or older
- Eligible to work in Canada
- No criminal record requiring a pardon
- Able to provide fingerprints and complete a criminal record check
- Eligible to apply for Government of Canada personnel security screening
- Effective communication in English (bilingualism an asset)
- Mental alertness: react calmly, quickly, and appropriately in any crisis; remain alert up to 12 hours; communicate observations; demonstrate problem‑solving and sound judgment
- Physical fitness: climb stairs with ease; navigate uneven terrain in all weather conditions; display dexterity and balance; stand for extended durations
- Superior attention to detail and verbal communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Computer literacy or aptitude to learn
- First Aid certification
- Successful completion of the Commissionaires Security Officer Course (online and/or in‑class)
- Use of Force Certified
- Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces or RCMP
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training
- Valid Nova Scotia driver's license or reliable transportation to/from worksites
- Bilingualism (French/English)
