Job SummaryAt Southeast Medical Group, the Medical Technician performs routine laboratory analysis independently, including specimen collection and processing. This role supports daily quality control checks, maintains equipment, accurate documentation, and ensures adherence to safety protocols while upholding patient confidentiality and delivering quality customer service. The Technician will supervise the Laboratory Assistants on all shifts and ensure that all AABB and CLSI guidelines for specimen handling and safety are followed.
The Technician will contribute to efficient lab workflows, inventory management, and a safe working environment. At Southeast Medical Group, we prioritize employee and patient safety in accordance with OSHA standards.
- Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR ):
Complete annual training on exposure control plans, using universal precautions, and reporting exposure incidents immediately. - Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Wear appropriate PPE as provided and maintain it properly. - Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR ):
Follow safety data sheet instructions for chemicals. - Needle stick Safety and Prevention:
Use safety-engineered sharps devices. - General Safety Duties:
Maintain hazard-free environment and participate in emergency drills; hepatitis B vaccinations offered free of charge. - Training and Recordkeeping:
Complete all OSHA-required training sessions; maintain records of training, vaccinations, and exposure incidents.
- Assists in specimen collection and processing, including labeling, centrifuging, and preparing samples for testing.
- Label, process, and transport specimens accurately for analysis, maintaining chain-of-custody documentation.
- Prepares lab equipment, reagents, and work areas for procedures; cleans and sterilizes instruments and surfaces according to OSHA and infection control standards.
- Maintains accurate equipment records and daily work logs.
- Enters laboratory data accurately and promptly into the lab information system (LIS) or electronic health records (EHR).
- Follows safety protocols, including monitoring biohazard waste disposal and maintaining personal protective equipment.
- Supports quality assurance activities, such as quality control checks, proficiency testing, and team training sessions.
- Provides general administrative support, such as filing reports, ordering supplies, and helping with patient instructions for specimen collection.
- Collaborates with staff to respond to routine lab needs, troubleshoot minor issues, and perform other assigned duties while prioritizing patient safety and confidentiality.
- Bachelor’s Degree in medical laboratory science, biology, or chemistry from an accredited institution.
- Certifications:
ASCP or AMT. - Current BLS certification required or to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Basic computer literacy, including data entry and Microsoft Office skills.
- Strong attention to detail, precise following of instructions, and commitment to safety protocols.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills for a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
- Experience with EMR Allscripts/Veradigm and/or CGM Lab Daq (LIS).
- Experience with Quidel Ortho Vitros 5600 and/or Sysmex XN-2000.
- Experience in a clinical laboratory, healthcare, or related setting.
- Knowledge of basic lab procedures, such as specimen processing and aseptic techniques, aligned with CLSI best practices.
