The Project Engineer works directly under Project Managers on private and public roadway construction and reconstruction projects. The role requires a basic understanding of project management, site development, and critical‑path scheduling.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform duties with Sunland’s core values as the forefront.
- Assist Project Managers with daily tasks.
- Apply for and pull necessary project permits.
- Support pre‑construction and scheduling meetings.
- Perform project cost accounting functions.
- Support field crews in daily assignments.
- Attend weekly production meetings and coordinate with project consultants.
- Advocate safety and follow policies.
- Collaborate with Operations Manager, Project Manager, and superintendents to accurately account for resources.
- Develop and modify work processes to ensure quality, productivity, and profitability.
- Represent the company professionally to customers, vendors, subcontractors, and the public.
- Complete administrative tasks promptly and efficiently.
- Document daily quantities and complete daily field reports.
- Verify traffic control plans are set up according to project plans.
- Document safety incidents or near misses and notify Project Manager.
- Perform any other duties assigned.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

- This is a safety‑sensitive position, subject to the company’s drug and alcohol policy and all OSHA regulations.
- All employees must wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Serve as a safety ambassador, complying with federal, state, and local laws, enforcing safe work practices, and proactively identifying and remedying hazards.
- Professional construction sites and office environments; use of standard office equipment.
- Communicate verbally on site, in person, and by telephone; read printed materials and computer screens.
- Lift, push, pull, carry, or handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds; climb ladders; balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and lift overhead.
- Work on project sites and operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, and equipment per safety guidelines.
- Work outdoors frequently in all weather, including extreme temperatures.
- Potential exposure to chemicals, vapors, pollutants, viruses, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles, dust, and debris.
- Full‑time; occasional evenings and weekends as required.
- Willingness to travel to all job sites without exception.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field, or 2‑5 years of highway asphalt paving or related experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and good understanding of MS Project or equivalent.
- No certifications required; OSHA safety training is a plus.
- Strong mathematical skills for complex layout calculations and material estimates.
- Broad understanding of project management: budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and contract administration.
- Prior heavy construction or asphalt industry experience.
- Critical thinker who anticipates problems and is solution oriented.
- Fluency in English (speaking, reading, writing).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Clean motor‑vehicle record.
- Passing pre‑employment drug and alcohol screening and background check required.
