Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for an Academic Fellowship Trained Breast Surgical Oncologist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, located in Tucson, AZ. The Surgeon will be responsible for providing specialized breast cancer treatment within the scope of breast surgical oncology care, and developing treatment plans for patients alongside our specialty teams.
Responsibilities include performing breast surgery, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, participating in cancer care programs, and ensuring patients receive the highest standard of medical and surgical care. Additionally, teaching and mentoring medical students and residents will be part of the role. We are very active with both basic science and clinical research; our breast surgeons are mentoring a breast surgical oncology research fellow for this current academic year (two SSO abstracts submitted and accepted), multiple other abstracts submitted to ASBrS
2026 as well, more to be submitted in 2026.
You are expected to work alongside plastic surgeons and be familiar with the nuances of both implant-based and autologous breast reconstruction. Dr. Aaron Mason just started a Plastic Surgery 3-year fellowship for which he serves as the Program Director. A few months ago, we welcomed Dr. Joseph Carey from USC, a nationally renowned reconstructive and microvascular surgeon who is now the section chief of plastic surgery.
We recognise and welcome this growth and are simultaneously hiring another plastic surgeon to help with the growing footprint of our program.
You would be joining three current surgeons performing breast surgery (both benign, high-risk lesions, and malignant). We have a high-risk clinic that runs independently by two APPs. Additionally, we are in the process of creating our breast cancer survivorship program. We have a breast nurse navigator and multiple MA’s each assigned to a surgeon. We have OR schedulers who will take care of your OR scheduling and facilitate getting the breast surgeon and plastic surgeon a timely mutual OR date.
You will be assigned an Administerstice assistant for all your academic needs and meeting requests. Highly trained coders will take care of your coding and billing and send you their reports to approve.
Patients will be primarily evaluated at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (NAPBC, only NCI-designated cancer center in the state of Arizona) and some satellite clinics across Tucson as deemed necessary by our section chief, Dr. Taylor Riall. Surgeries will be performed at Banner University Medical Center Tucson (BUMCT), the #1 hospital in Tucson. We have both a main OR floor and recently opened an ambulatory same-day surgery center;
you have the opportunity to do some of your cases at both OR locations.
