Igbo Language Tutor - Technical Expert (Student Support Specialist I) (Part-Time)
The Critical Languages Program (CLP) offers less commonly taught languages (LCTLs), which are not available in traditional departments and formats at the University of Arizona. In partnership with other academic departments, CLP also offers non-credit tutoring in various foreign languages.
CLP seeks a part‑time Igbo Language Tutor – Technical Expert (Student Support Specialist I) to conduct weekly credit and non‑credit tutorial sessions. The candidate must be a fluent, proficient speaker of Igbo, able to work professionally with small group tutorial sessions (or 1:1) and act as a liaison between the students and the department. The content focus may include speaking, pronunciation, grammar, writing, reading, and study‑skills development.
Duties & Responsibilities- Conduct weekly tutorial sessions in the use/practice of the Igbo language.
- Conform course learning goals to course student outcomes.
- Select and add language and cultural content as appropriate to the course D2L content page and share with students.
- Finalize course syllabi, including relevant dates, post to D2L, and submit to the Director and Program Coordinator prior to the start of the semester.
- Schedule classes and submit the schedule to the Program Coordinator prior to the beginning of semester or session.
- Assess, grade, and provide evaluative feedback for each student’s individual midterm and final exam performance.
- Record grades and weekly student attendance in D2L.
- Submit evaluations to meet academic deadlines.
- Submit tutor self‑evaluation to Program Coordinator at the end of the semester.
- Provide timely communication and feedback to students throughout the semester.
- Promote extra‑curricular activities related to language development with students.
- Conduct language assessments for placement and course assessments, as needed.
- Attend program trainings and meetings as necessary.
- Number of work hours determined at time of course hire.
- Adhere to university code of conduct policies.
- Complete and keep current all university required trainings required to complete duties.
- Complete other duties as needed and assigned.
- Complete the Tutor as a Foreign Language Certificate training, subsidized by CLP, for those who do not have a B.A./B.S. degree and/or degree in education or a language-related field during the first year of employment.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
- One year of relevant work experience required.
- Native or near-native fluency in Igbo.
- Applicants must have experience effectively communicating in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
- Teaching and/or tutoring experience of a foreign language.
- Tutoring experience in self‑instructional model courses.
- Tutoring experience in online environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in second‑language teaching.
- Certification related to second‑language teaching.
Hourly rate: $22.77
