Position Highlights

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Arizona is accepting applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in the College of Medicine. We seek investigators with an interest in data science in areas of substance use disorder, genetic variation, and public health‑related issues in cancer and cancer treatments. The applicant should have prior experience collecting and managing data, using Artificial Intelligence (AI), and working with undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.

The Department has a strong, internationally recognized program dedicated to the study of neuropharmacology, physiology, chronic pain, and cancer biology. The expertise of current faculty encompasses a spectrum of molecular, neurobiological, neuropharmacological, and multidisciplinary techniques, allowing for vibrant collaborative efforts to address questions that integrate novel therapies, drug discovery, and developmental studies. It is expected that the successful candidate will establish collaborative projects with current faculty, provide outstanding mentorship to trainees at various career stages (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students), and contribute to the teaching mission of the Department of Pharmacology and/or the College of Medicine.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Seek and/or retain extramural funding for research by developing and submitting grant proposals to appropriate funding agencies; as Principal Investigator, partner with faculty to form research teams, develop research plans, write funding proposals, and implement and disseminate results through peer‑reviewed publications, conference presentations, and invited lectures.
  • Develop independent research programs and contribute to graduate (Ph.D.), medical (M.D.) and undergraduate (BS in Medicine) education.
  • Engage in teaching activities for undergraduate and graduate students and/or medical students.
  • Participate on appropriate departmental and/or College of Medicine committees, and professional organization committees as appropriate.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD, DrPH, and/or MD or comparable doctoral degree.
  • At least three (3) years of postdoctoral training.
  • Meet the University of Arizona criteria for appointment to a tenure‑eligible faculty position.
  • Established record of productivity and innovation.
  • Established, or strong potential to establish, an independent lab and extramurally funded research program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated expertise in data science management, use of AI to create novel scientific questions, understanding of public health issues in substance use disorder, chemotherapeutic treatments, and human papillomavirus propagation in the community.
  • Experience performing human research, including submission of IRB.
  • Experience in training students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with excellent communication skills.
  • Established expertise working with diverse communities.
  • Experience in writing grants and peer‑reviewed publications.
