Please note:
this is an open and continuous recruitment. Performs corrections work ensuring the welfare of adult inmates, court or direct remanded juvenile inmates, departmental and superior court staff, and maintaining security control and custody in a functional unit of a direct supervision jail. This is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff classification, which is certified to exercise law enforcement powers.
This division operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. All positions are required to engage in inmate contact, to work rotating shifts which include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and to work an assigned post that can be rotated or reassigned at management's discretion.
Essential Functions- Maintains security of assigned facility by observing and controlling inmate behaviors, enforcing discipline, and reporting observations
- Inspects living conditions within housing units for compliance with sanitation objectives
- Conducts checks of inmate housing and performs cell searches for inmate census and contraband detection
- Controls, operates, and inspects life safety equipment, electronic safety and surveillance equipment, and door control systems
- Performs booking, fingerprinting, identification, and records maintenance procedures
- Reviews all incident numbers, logs major rule violations, and prints major charge sheets
- Reviews all officer incident reports, evidence, and major charge sheets to ensure violations are clearly identified, follows protocols, and verifies reports are completed correctly
- Conducts inmate hearings in a timely manner
At the time of appointment, applicants must hold a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate and must be at least 18 years of age.

Additional InformationThis is a tested position. Candidates will receive an information packet detailing the steps of the hiring process. Important dates for multiple-choice tests, physical fitness assessments, monthly oral board interviews, monthly polygraphs, background investigations, and the Corrections Officer Training Academy are provided during the selection process.
Licenses and CertificationsValid driver license required at time of application and appointment. Valid Arizona driver license required successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine suitability to operate county vehicles. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications may result in termination. Current first aid and CPR certification must be acquired prior to completion of initial training and maintained as a condition of employment.
Certification to wear and maintain respirators, protective masks, and personal protective equipment is required as directed by department. Some positions may require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with endorsements at the time of appointment or before completion of an initial or promotional probation period.
Pre-employment background checks are required. Applicants will receive a post-offer background screening to verify work history, education, and criminal conviction history. Candidates with a prior criminal conviction will not be automatically disqualified. Department of Labor Regulation CFR Part requires notification that this category may have a high risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Hepatitis B vaccine and protective training and equipment will be provided.
All positions require satisfactory completion of a background investigation, polygraph examinations, drug screening, and polygraph due to required access to confidential information. Physical and sensory work requirements: use of fine motor skills to operate firearms and equipment; speaking and listening to communicate critical information; observing details at close and distant ranges; operating vehicles safely; walking or running varying distances; carrying or lifting objects up to 25–100 pounds as appropriate.
Working conditions include exposure to severe weather, loud noises, dangerous traffic conditions, and obstacles.
