Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited program.

  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Work with veterans and families from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational backgrounds using counseling skills.
    • Assess psychosocial functioning, develop and implement treatment plans.
    • Implement treatment modalities for individuals, families, and groups.
    • Establish effective communication and build relationships with clients, staff, and community agencies.
    • Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, illnesses, medications, and terminology.
    • For GS‑11:
      Minimum one year of post‑MSW experience equivalent to GS‑9 grade in health care or social work settings; a doctoral degree may substitute for this experience.
    • Knowledge of community resources and referral coordination.
    • Consultation services for new social workers and staff.
    • Preferred Experience
      :
      Outpatient setting with mental health disorders and substance use; experience with veterans or active duty military.
  • References: VA Handbook 5005 – Part II appendix G39 (Social Worker Qualification Standards – GS‑185 – Veterans Health Administration).
  • Full performance level of this vacancy is GS‑11; actual grade selection may range from GS‑9 to GS‑11.

Duties
  • Member of a veteran’s assigned Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary (BHIP) team.
  • Ongoing point of contact and clinical resource promoting treatment engagement, especially during care transitions.
  • Ensure veterans and, when appropriate, family/caregivers have access to education, information, and self‑management resources.
  • Complete a Mental Health Treatment Coordinator (MHTC) care coordination needs assessment.
  • Develop an initial MHTC care coordination intervention plan, including intended frequency of contact.
  • Provide and document MHTC care coordination in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Monitor MHTC care coordination and treatment needs; adjust interventions collaboratively with the BHIP clinical team.
  • Support evaluation of MHTC care coordination to promote access, quality, veteran and provider experience, and cost savings.
  • Provide MHTC care coordination information and documentation per schedule (Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
  • Former EDRP participants ineligible for incentive.
  • Contact VHA.ELRSProgram Support with questions or assistance.
  • Parental leave: after 12 months of employment – up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
  • Child care subsidy: after 60 days of employment – full‑time employees with a total family income below $144,000 can receive a childcare subsidy up to 25% of eligible costs, with a monthly maximum of $416.66.
  • Retirement: traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contribution by VA Insurance.
