Bilingual Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

American Vision Partners (AVP) partners with leading ophthalmology practices to deliver high‑quality patient care. This role involves preparing patients for examination, performing preliminary tests, and ensuring a smooth clinic flow while providing exceptional care.

Overview

As a Bilingual Ophthalmic Assistant, you’ll prepare the patient for the exam with the doctor, gather important medical information, perform preliminary tests, and provide the highest quality of care and exceptional patient experience.

Responsibilities
  • Welcomes patients and visitors with a positive, warm disposition
  • Keeps doctors’ rooms filled to ensure clinic patient flow
  • Obtains patient histories through intake assessments, making note of findings in EHR
  • Performs visual acuity, auto‑refraction, manual and automated lensometry, Goldmann and Tonopen tonometry tests and keratometry on patients
  • Checks pupils, extra‑ocular muscles, confrontational fields and inserts eye drops for dilation
  • Runs diagnostic tests such as Immersion A‑scan, OCTs and Visual Fields
  • Administers color vision, depth perception and Schirmer’s tear testing as needed
  • Assists in minor office procedures (lasers, excisions, etc.)
  • Educates patients on ophthalmic conditions and consent for procedures and surgery
  • Maintains exam rooms, including cleaning/sterilization as necessary
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Some college preferred.
    • Valid proof of certification as an ophthalmic assistant.
  • Bilingual in Spanish (Preferred)
  • Two to five years experience as a certified ophthalmic assistant.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects regarding ophthalmic care.
  • Knowledgeable of insurance and referrals.
  • Preferred knowledge of electronic health record skills.
  • Demonstrated advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Empathetic personality with concern for patient needs.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Demonstrated comprehension of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive workups on three patients per hour.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy.
