Position Highlights

The Department of Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona is seeking an open-rank tenured or tenure-eligible faculty member in medical speech-language pathology or audiology who will contribute to the department's research, teaching, and service missions. This is a 9-month (academic) position to begin in August of 2026, with rank (assistant, associate, full professor) commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities include scholarship, teaching, and service. Inclusion of person-centered approaches to scholarship, teaching, and service is preferred, along with a publication record of high-impact research and a strong and sustainable funding record, appropriate to the level of appointment.

The Department seeks faculty with expertise in a medical speech-language pathology or audiology (e.g., dysphagia, cognitive communication disorders, auditory physiology, cochlear implants). We welcome applicants with transdisciplinary research relevant to speech, language, hearing, and vestibular sciences such as artificial intelligence, data informatics, and research design and statistics. Research that addresses needs of a wide demographic breadth is preferred.

The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is renowned for its clinical training programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology as well as its active doctoral program. Our department includes 30 faculty, 104 graduate students in three degree programs (MS, AuD, PhD), and 208 undergraduate students.

Faculty in the Department benefit from rich collaborative environments within the University and the Tucson communities. There are established collaborative relationships with local leaders in healthcare including Banner Medical Center, Tucson Medical Center, and the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The Department is housed in the College of Science and School of Mind, Brain, and Behavior, providing a rich network of scientists across multiple disciplines.

Ongoing collaborations include faculty from Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, and Eller College of Business.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

The workload in the department, under present policy, has a typical distribution of:
  • 40% scholarly activity/research;
  • 40% teaching; and
  • 20% service.
Scholarly Activity and Research:

Research and scholarship activities include but are not limited to:
  • Establish a successful research program that will enhance knowledge in the field of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.
  • Maintain consistent record of peer-reviewed publication and presentation of research findings to colleagues and the community.
  • Pursue extramural funding.
  • Mentor undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows from a wide range of backgrounds in research.
Teaching:

Teaching activities include but are not limited to:
  • Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Provide effective evidence-based instruction that fosters critical thinking and motivates independent learning.
  • Develop new courses, as assigned.
  • Provide effective graduate advising.
Service:

Service activities include but are not limited to:
  • Relate and interact successfully and collegially with students and peers.
  • Participate effectively on departmental and university committees.
  • Participate in student recruitment/admission/retention.
